Johannesburg: The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) will officially hand over a consignment of essential goods to the OR Tambo District Disaster Management team in Mthatha on Friday, 07 November 2025, to assist communities affected by the floods that devastated parts of the OR Tambo Municipality.
The handover ceremony will be held at the OR Tambo District Hall in Southernwood.
The heavy rains claimed the lives of more than 100 people, leaving many families displaced, homes destroyed, and essential services severely disrupted. In response, the NHLS mobilised a nationwide internal donation drive, with employees from all regions and laboratories contributing clothes, blankets, food parcels, toiletries, and other essential household items. These donations are being handed over as a demonstration of the organisation’s enduring solidarity with communities in distress.
Rooted in the spirit of Ubuntu, the NHLS recognises that its responsibility to the nation extends beyond the laboratory bench. The organisation views community wellbeing as integral to its public health mission, especially in times of crisis when coordinated action and empathy are most needed.
The handover in Mthatha is not merely a gesture of goodwill; it is a tangible expression of national unity and the NHLS’ belief that public institutions must play an active role in strengthening the country’s social fabric.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover this event, which highlights the NHLS’ commitment to working hand-in-hand with communities, fostering resilience, and supporting recovery efforts in times of need.
END.
