The National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) joins the rest of the world in recognising its medical laboratory professionals (pathologists, medical laboratory scientists, medical technicians, and technicians and technologists) during the week-long celebration of Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (14-20 April 2024) with the theme: The Future is Lab.

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week shines a spotlight on the remarkable work conducted by these unsung heroes who play a pivotal role in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Through their meticulous analysis and interpretation of laboratory tests, these professionals provide essential information that guides clinical decision-making and ultimately improves patient outcomes.

“This week, we celebrate the dedication and expertise of our medical laboratory professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support public healthcare delivery in South Africa,” said Prof Adrian Puren, Acting CEO of the NHLS. “Their unwavering commitment to quality, accuracy, and patient care is commendable and deserves recognition.”

The NHLS employs around 2953 medical laboratory workers countrywide, including 237 pathologists, 210 medical scientists, and 2403 medical technicians and technologists. Additionally, the NHLS employs 103 forensic analysts who work at the Forensic Chemistry Laboratories in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, and Pretoria.

These professionals make appropriate evidence-based diagnostic or therapeutic decisions for patients based on laboratory information in this complex healthcare system. Technicians ensure that the correct test is performed at the right time.

“We are immensely proud of our team of medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who demonstrate excellence and professionalism daily,” added Prof Puren. “Their dedication to improving healthcare outcomes and enhancing the well-being of our communities is truly inspiring.”

Apart from routine tests, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the indispensable role of laboratory professionals in pandemic preparedness and response, highlighting their resilience and adaptability in the face of unprecedented challenges.

“Together, let us honour their dedication, expertise, and commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery, especially in the public health sector,” concluded Prof Puren.
