DELAYS IN SNAKEBITE ANTIVENOM PRODUCTION

JOHANNESBURG: The South African Vaccine Producers (SAVP), a part of the National Health Laboratory Service, is facing delays in producing snakebite antivenom due to facility upgrades, which have led to the depletion of reserves.

The NHLS initiated a renovation project for SAVP’s facilities to improve production efficiency. The initiative intends to address previous concerns related to machine breakdowns, which are mostly caused by ageing equipment and inadequate infrastructure.

The NHLS is pleased to announce that the contractors have completed the renovations. The organisation is currently focused on ensuring full commissioning of both the facility and the equipment. This process will facilitate the return of the SAVP to production. The NHLS reaffirms its commitment to restoring antivenom production.

The NHLS sincerely thanks all its stakeholders for their understanding and patience during this challenging period.
