Executive Manager Laboratory Services – Prof Pieter Meyer

Prof Pieter Meyer is the Executive of the NHLS Laboratory Services. Prof Meyer is a distinguished C-rated medical scientist from the NRF and holds a PhD in medical immunology. He brings more than 30 years of experience in allergology, autoimmunity, transplantation, oncoimmunology, immunophenotyping and infectious disease diagnostics to his new role.

Prior to his appointment, he led the academic and research programmes within the Department of Immunology at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria. He was also co-head of the Immunology Diagnostic Laboratory in the Tshwane Academic Department at the NHLS. His pioneering research focussed on proteomic biomarkers in rheumatoid arthritis to improve disease assessment, treatment efficacy and patient outcomes.

His distinguished career at NHLS, which began as a medical technology student, includes positions as Laboratory Manager, Principal Medical Scientist and Department Head. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, averaging 75 citations annually in recent years. In his capacity as Laboratory Service Executive, he will oversee diagnostic operations, innovation, and quality standards, reinforcing NHLS’s leadership in public health laboratory services.
