The NHLS has four service branches: Central, Coastal, KwaZulu-Natal and Northern branches. Each branch is headed by an Executive Regional Manager.
The branches are divided into sets of laboratories and each set is run by a Business Manager. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and National Institute for Occupational Health are special branches and are headed by an Executive Director.
